New Lego Technic F1 cars coming – McLaren MP4/4 and Mercedes AMG W14

An alternative to plastic and diecast F1 models are building brick sets. With the resurgent popularity of Lego, its no surprise that Lego has managed to license some famous F1 team marques (McLaren & Mercedes AMG) to release their own building block sets for these F1 cars. Coming next month, is Lego’s next 1:8 scale Lego Technic construction set of the Mercedes AMG W14 at a monstrous 25inches/63cm in length.

Prior to this, Lego has previously released a 1:8 scale Lego Technic construction set of the papaya and blue McLaren MCL35 which has developed a devoted following with Lego builders including various  hacks like motorised conversions.

The new Mercedes W14 model will consist of over 1600 pieces and when built offers working mechanical parts like steering wheel (without DAS of course!), rotating engine pistons, moving differential gears, working DRS wing flap and spring suspension. These of course, were also features available in Lego’s 1:8 McLaren MCL35 model.

As you can see from the photos, the nose section of Lego’s built W14 has an exaggerated arch but otherwise looks like a decent rendition of the actual race car.

Also for release next month for Lego is Ayrton Senna’s McLaren MP4/4 under its Lego Icons branding. This is a 693 piece set that when built includes the car which can be mounted on a display stand and a mini-Senna driver figure with podium trophy.

This model also has working steering, adjustable rear wing flap and removable engine cowling. It does resemble the low profile  MP4/4 on its side view but less so when the model is viewed from the front or isometric views.

To cater for juniors, Lego will also release 200+ piece kits for last season’s Mercedes AMG W14 and McLaren MCL60.

I might post a review of one of these Lego model kits later this year and possibly also China toymaker CaDa’s Alfa Romeo C42 1:8 kit model (if I manage to get my hands on one!).
