Bluray Review: Ferrari 312B
Positives
Negatives
Hope many of you managed to receive a nice F1 gift for Christmas. My present was a Bluray documentary film on the iconic flat v12 powered Ferrari 312B raced in the early 1970’s. This film traces the recent restoration project instigated by former Italian Minardi 90’s driver Paolo Barilla (of the famous Italian pasta company) to bring back to life the Ferrari 312B to race at Monaco’s 2016 Historic Grand Prix alongside the Lotus 72 and March.
The film contains a blend of different styles – part behind the scenes reality documentary with the trials and tribulations of getting the rebuild 312B accurate to its 1970’s specifications and reliable enough for the Monaco race. Other parts of the film include interviews with key protagonists of the time – Ferrari driver Jacky Ickx, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, former 312B mechanics and legendary Ferrari engineer designer Mauro Forghieri. In fact, the film doubles up as a bit of biopic of Forghieri and the 312B.
The story arc of the restoration of the 312B for the Monaco race and the technical challenges of getting the engine and fuel pumps reliable will interest more mechanically minded F1 fans. There’s lots of time spent in the workshop and the dyno breathing the V12 back to life.
The features I enjoyed are the beautiful roar of the V12 when they fire up the engine and a lot of the archival footage with Clay Regazzoni.
At almost 90min it is a full length film – although I wish there was more old footage included.
Suitable for: Tofosi and Forghieri fans
