Fantasy Concept F1 car diecast models
While we wait to see whether the new regulations in 2022 will produce the futuristic cars the FIA is hoping to see appearing on the grid, there are already several fantasy or F1 concept cars that have made it into diecast and plastic kit models.
1. Red Bull X2010 (Autoart 1:18)
The X2010 concept fan car was first born in 2015 as a drivable virtual race car within Sony’s popular Gran Turismo Playstation console game and Autoart was licensed to produce 1:18 diecast model of the X2010 (old post). A collaboration between Red Bull’s Adrian Newey and Polyphony Digital (creators of Gran Turismo), the X2010 was intended to be futuristic interpretation of a race car without complying with regulations (emulating the fan car concept of the banned Brabham BT46).
Autoart manufactured the 1:18 scale in a variety of colours (red, orange, grey, white), although the model with the traditional Red Bull race livery version is the most expensive.
2. Red Bull X2014 (Autoart 1:18 and Taiwan 7-11)
The X2014 is the evolution of the X2010 with more sculptured aero including wider floor and rear wing.
If you want a design comparison between the X2010 and the X2014, the Gran Turismo website has an excellent summary page with photo compares (https://www.gran-turismo.com/au/news/00_3767740.html)
Again, Autoart produced the X2014 in 1:18 scale in Red Bull race livery and 2 other colour variants – hyper silver and metallic silver.
A 1:55 scale version of the X2014 was also produced a part of 7-11 Taiwan promotional with Red Bull “The Adventurous World of Red Bull” series which included small scale models of other members of the Red Bull family including the RB13, Toro Rosso STR12 and Repsol Honda MotoGP.
3. McLaren MP4-X (Minichamps & Spark)
The MP4-X design was unveiled in 2015 as a concept project by McLaren engineering including banned ground effects, solar cell skin, active aero, digital livery and driver brain synaptic interface controls. The MP4-X was available in 1:43 scale from Minichamps and 1:43 and 1:18 scale in resin by Spark.
In 2018, McLaren gave the MP4-X an upgrade with papaya race livery on the McLaren X2 (see: https://www.mclaren.com/racing/inside-the-mtc/mclaren-x2-power-2-4275496/) although the X2 has yet to be made into a collectable diecast.
4. CyberFormula (Aoshima)
Future GPX CyberFormula is a Japanese anime TV series set in the future where Grand Prix race cars are enhanced with retractable aero fan turbines and afterburner booster rockets built into the chassis. The cars have extremely aggressive aero designs and 6 wheels to boot!
Aoshima produce plastic kit models of the Cyber Formula race cars in 1:24 scale including the Asurada, Ogre and Spiegel with a variety of aero mode enhancements. If you want to see these – check out Youtube, the CyberFormula race cars are basically jet planes with wheels and the plastic kit build videos are excellent.
