Another Senna book for junior readers is Scholastic’s and Fiona Beddall’s “Senna”. This book is part of Scholastic’s series in a short form format aimed at the intermediate junior teenage reader level as opposed to the kids storybook “Little People, Big Dreams: Ayrton Senna” which I posted a review on back in October last year.
This softcover is about the size of a typical paperback and at 56 pages, surprisingly covers a lot of Ayrton’s life from his early karting days in Brazil all the way through to the fateful 1994 Imola accident and post-1994, his ongoing legacy to Brazilians (including Bruno Senna racing in F1 in 2011) in a very compact style.
Key Senna races like Monaco ’84 & ’88, Suzuka ’88 & ’90 are highlighted in summary and there are beginner pages to Grand Prix race weekends.
The photo selection is largely from Sutton and Getty image library and again the choice of thumbnail photos for a junior Senna book is very meaningful – from the women in Ayrton’s life, Formula 3 crash with Martin Brundle, driving the Mercedes sedan at the Nürburgring invitational, Estoril win in the Lotus JPS, etc.
For adult Senna fans, there’s nothing in here that hasn’t been written or photographed before in other Senna books however the content is very compact and I think would make a very nice gift for a junior reader who is new to Formula 1.
