Book Review: Kimberley’s Grand Prix Team Guide No.5 – McLaren by Bob Constanduros

Negatives
I have to admit that it has taken me a little while to adjust to McLaren’s latest livery in today’s 2020 launch. It’s a far cry from the iconic red & white Marlboro McLarens in the 80’s. The old Kimberley’s series publications had a good issue #5 covering the carbon fibre McLaren MP4 series.
Written by Bob Constanduros with John Townsend photography, at 24 pages these Kimberley’s team guides were a great compact write up of F1 teams in the early 80’s. Issue #5 included profile pages on founder Bruce McLaren, Teddy Mayer, Ron Dennis, season 1982 drivers Niki Lauda and John Watson, John Barnard (design engineer of the carbon fibre MP4) and Tyler Alexander.
The photo collection is largely a mix of B&W and colour race shots across 8 pages from the M23, M28, M29, M29B , MP4 and MP4B.
These books can still be found although Issue #6 Lotus seems to command good prices.
Money shot/Wow Factor: B&W photos of the exposed MP4-1/B by John Townsend.
