To fans of early 1980s Formula 1, Gilles Villeneuve was the flamboyant racer – a pure racing spirit. So you would expect a documentary on Gilles to capture that same excitement. Unfortunately, this Duke DVD film “Formula Villeneuve” is a film full of talking heads and interviews. Watching to great racers in Fangio and Moss talking endlessly about Gilles in a 80’s deco lounge room is as exciting as watching paint dry.
Apart from Fangio and Moss, the documentary includes a hots of big name interviews – team mate and rival Pironi, Walter Wolf, Patrick Tambay, Jody Scheckter, Mario Andretti, Jacques Laffite, Enzo Ferrari, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda and his wife Joann.
There is more footage of other cars and drivers than race footage of Gilles in this film which is surprising. A bit of film 3 wheeling at Zandvort and bits of his famous duel with Arnoux at Dijon. It includes footage of Gilles on his snow mobile and also a rare interview with Enzo Ferrari himself describing Gilles as reminding him of the great Nuvolari.
For a Duke video, this is a let down and one to avoid unless you can pick it up cheaply. Way too much talking and not enough race action…
